Lexine Fahima Hourani
PLAYED-BY: Zoe Saldana, held
DATE OF BIRTH: 27 & 12/19/1981
BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood
CHARACTER SUMMARY: Lexine Hourani and she is a halfblood neutral who works at the Dog's Breath Inn and Pub in Knockturn Alley, tending the bar and serving on more busy nights. She's a Hogwarts graduate (hufflepuff house) and has serious anger management issues. Her Mother and Father worked in the Wizarding embassies for Kenya and Egypt, respectively, and Lexine grew up primarily in the care of her Grandmother. Because her family life is so disjointed, she has never really considered or cared for the significance of bloodlines. The people that stick by you are the ones that matter, not whether or not their parents or their parents parents could do magic.
RESIDENCE: A one bedroom flat in Brixton.
AFFILIATION: Neutral. Though working in a pub that mostly caters to deatheaters and deatheater sympathizers makes her status as a 'neutral' member of society difficult, Lexine (an only child with few close friends) is accustomed to looking out for herself and her number one goal is survival. The best way to survive these days? Don't take sides.
OCCUPATION: Bartender at the Dog’s Breath Inn, occasionally serving tables when the Inn gets crowded. She got the job from friend and co-owner hildie who was a close friend from Hogwarts. She’d recently given birth to her son, and Lexi was looking for a job. The timing couldn’t be better.
EDUCATION: Hufflepuff Class of ’99. Lexine completed all seven years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Hufflepuff house, scoring high in Charms, Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts but finding herself on the verge of failing in her other courses. She hated Potions and Herbology (finding them disgusting and tedious- Lexi was an instant gratification kind of girl) and fell asleep regularly in History of Magic. Because of the inconsistency in her interests and efforts, she was not a particularly memorable student, though she did play two years as a chaser on the Hufflepuff Quidditch team.
FAMILY: GRANDMOTHER Amira Hourani, FATHER Hassan Hourani, MOTHER Orma Hourani nee Onyango UNCLE Mahmud Hourani
Hassan’s family had immigrated to England from Egypt after the birth of their first son Mahmud. Hassan was born shortly thereafter, and had a fairly traditional English Wizarding upbringing. His connection to Egypt and the middle east however remained strong, and it was his heritage that helped guide his future career. Orma was born and raised in Kenya to a Muggle Father and British Witch Mother. The couple divorced when Orma was seventeen, and she returned to England with her Mother, getting a job in the Wizarding Embassy for Kenya. Lexine’s parents met while working in International Wizarding Relations, and subsequently fell in love. Lexine, however, was an unplanned pregnancy, and her arrival put a damper on the couple’s snowballing careers. Hassan and Orma never married, and eventually separated when Lexine was a toddler.
Because both of her parents had positions that required constant travel, Lexine grew up in her Grandmother’s care at her home in Brixton. It was a modest place with one floor and two bedrooms, something that never bothered Lexi until she enrolled in Hogwarts School and got to see how the other half lived. The vastness of the school and the scope of the campus created some resentment in the young girl, both in regards to the money and family that was lacking in her life. She learned very quickly to keep her private life private and not to let anyone walk over her because of where she came from. By the time Lex reached her teens, visits from her Mother were few and far between, though she does still get the occasional card and box of chocolates on major holidays. Hassan remains present (though his visits are sporadic) and when he can, instills words of wisdom that usually involve staying out of trouble.
PERSONALITY: At first glance it is difficult to see why someone like Lexine would be sorted in to Hufflepuff. In school, she preferred to work alone in classes, and never had a romantic relationship that lasted more than a week- not to mention she was and still is incredibly abrasive and difficult to hold a conversation with. Lex is almost always on the defensive, her sharp tongue ready to lash out at you no matter how innocent your comment may be. Having experienced prejudice for her gender, race, bloodline, socioeconomic status and house for years... well. She's learned to arm herself with a rapier wit and, let's admit it, a few extra decibels. When given the chance however, like any Hufflepuff, Lexi can be fiercely loyal. Once her respect or love is earned, it's nearly impossible to shake. Those she considers friends can usually count on her for just about anything, and she is surprisingly easy to guilt into favors once the relationship reaches that point.
